Food Hygiene for Food Handlers Hospitality Sector

Anyone handling food should know the importance of food hygiene in order to avoid making customers sick. This 100% online course is considered the minimum requirement for everyone handling food in all states and territories of Australia. This is the entry level non-accredited course for a food handler.

Learning Summary
The course is 100% online with an assessment at the end of each section and takes about 1.5-2 hrs to complete. This course gives hospitality staff that handle food the necessary skills in food safety and food hygiene matters, ensuring compliance with the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code Standard 3.2.2 Food Safety Practices and General Requirements.

Learning includes:

  1. Understand the obligation of food handlers under current legislation
  2. Maintain the correct standards of personal hygiene
  3. The correct methods of food handling and storage

Food Allergen Awareness – Hospitality Sector

This course is designed for those in the hospitality sector to understand allergens and how to manage them in a food environment. The presence of undeclared allergens can be a serious risk to the health of susceptible customers and can have major effects on the food business.

NSW FSS -Food Safety Supervision (Release 1) (Level 1 + Level 2) Hospitality Sector SITSS00051

From 1 September 2015 to be certified as an FSS for a food premise in NSW and issued a valid certificate, a person must attain required units of competency from an approved RTO under the FSS program.

The units of competency must incorporate three key focus areas determined by the NSW Food Authority and published on its website:

  1. safe egg handling
  2. allergen management
  3. cleaning and sanitising practices.

This NSW Food Authority approved online course is the fastest way to get your Food Safety Supervisor certificate.  Start in 2 minutes and come and go as you please. Qualified trainers are available to assist you via phone or email.

SITSS00051 – Food Safety Supervision (Release 1) Hospitality Sector

A set of skills to equip individuals in the hospitality sector in hygienic practices and handling food safely during the storage, preparation, display, service, and disposal of food.
This skill set is made up of the following units:

  • SITXFSA001 – Use hygienic practices for food safety
  • SITXFSA002 – Participate in safe food handling practices
  • Plus the 3 focus areas identified by the NSW Food Authority
    • Safe egg handling
    • Allergen management
    • Cleaning and sanitation.

Over 4-8 hours including online assessment and interactive simulations, plus work based task (minimum of 1 shift) you will learn: 

  • Personal hygiene
  • Cross contamination
  • Safe egg handling
  • Allergen management​
  • Food storage & temperature control
  • Cleaning, sanitation & pest control
  • Food Safety Plan, basic monitoring and record keeping
  • Role and responsibilities of a Food Safety Supervisor

How you will be assessed

The online course is delivered in 9 short sections with an assessment quiz after each section. In addition, participants will be required to complete a work based task for Assessment.

To complete this course you will be required to complete a workplace assessment task to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge in a suitable industry environment.  As part of the course, the workplace supervisor of the student must complete an observation report of the student’s practical skills and sign a declaration that indicates the student is their employee and the workplace has the equipment/ resources required for assessment.

Qualification

A statement of attainment for the nationally recognised units of competency

  • SITXFSA001 – Use hygienic practices for food safety
  • SITXFSA002 – Participate in safe food handling practices
  • NSW Food Authority Food Safety Supervisor certificate – a PDF version will be emailed to you within 2 business days and a hard copy mailed to you within 5-10 days.*

*It is a requirement that the RTO provide your personal details to the NSW Food Authority in order to issue your NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate.

Food Handling (Release 1) Skill Set SITSS00050 (Level 1) Hospitality Sector

This is the entry level online  Government approved course for food handlers in the hospitality sector.  This online food handling course is the fastest and most convenient way for you to get your food handling certificate. This unit is one element (of two) of the Food Safety Supervisor requirement and is an excellent accredited course for  cooks, chefs, caterers, kitchen stewards, kitchen hands, bar and food and beverage attendants, and sometimes room attendants and front office staff.

This food handling course is for food handlers in the hospitality sector who directly handle food or food contact surfaces such as cutlery, plates and bowls during the course of their daily work activities.
This skill set is made up of the following unit:

  • SITXFSA001 – Use hygienic practices for food safety

This unit applies to all organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises or smaller food preparation or bar areas.

Students must successfully complete a LLN test to confirm the ability to effectively undertake the course.

Over 4-8 hours including assessment, interactive simulations and work based task you will learn:

  • Cross contamination
  • Food storage & temperature control
  • Cleaning, sanitation & pest control

How you will be assessed

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to handle food safely in the hospitality sector during the storage, preparation, display, service and disposal of food. It requires the ability to follow predetermined procedures as outlined in a food safety program.
It applies to food handlers who directly handle food during the course of their daily work activities.
This course delivers the following unit:

  • SITXFSA002 – Participate in safe food handling practices

The unit applies to all organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises or smaller food preparation areas.
