A Gold Coast restaurant has been hit with a record fine of almost $30,000 after health inspectors found it was overrun with cockroaches.

Gold Coast City Council had lodged a complaint in Southport Magistrates Court against The Hub Restaurant at Varsity Lakes after a health officer visited the eatery in mid-September, the Gold Coast Bulletin reports.

The officer found workers were not provided with soap and hand towels as well as unclean contact equipment, a build-up of food waste and scores of cockroaches inside the restaurant.

Council health officers noted the restaurant had a “history of contraventions” since April last year, and argued those poor standards continued after the initial September inspection.

The court agreed, fining restaurant management $15,500 and included an order to pay court and professional costs.

The restaurant’s owner, Courtney Tennyson Bell, was fined $13,500 and also ordered to pay costs.
